Getting to Pag Island from Zadar Airport

Zadar Airport (IATA: ZAD) is the closest airport to Pag Island and the natural entry point for most international visitors. From the terminal to Povljana the distance is about 59 km — roughly one hour by car along the A1 motorway and the island road. Here is a clear breakdown of your options.
Renting a Car (Recommended)
A rental car is the most practical choice for a Pag Island holiday. The island has no public transport between its villages, and having a car opens up beaches, Pag Old Town, Novalja, Zadar day trips, and the national parks within easy reach.
All major car hire companies operate desks inside the Zadar Airport terminal. Book online in advance during July and August — availability drops sharply during peak season and prices double if you book on arrival.
Route from the airport to Povljana:
- Exit the airport and follow signs toward the A1 motorway (Autocesta A1).
- Join the A1 heading south toward Split; take the exit for Posedarje / Pag.
- Follow the D306 road south and cross the Paški Most (Pag Bridge) onto the island.
- Continue south along the D106 island road to Povljana — approximately 20 minutes from the bridge.
Total driving time: approximately 55–65 minutes depending on traffic.
Toll note: The A1 motorway is tolled. Budget approximately 30–40 HRK (€4–5) for the Zadar–Pag section. Tolls are paid by credit card or cash.
Private Transfer
If you prefer not to drive, several Zadar-area transfer companies offer fixed-price door-to-door service from the airport to any address on Pag Island. Pre-book online with a Croatian transfer company — searches for "Zadar airport Pag island transfer" will return several reliable options. Prices are typically €50–80 for a standard vehicle one-way to Povljana.
A transfer is particularly convenient if you are arriving late, travelling with young children, or have a large group where splitting a transfer cost makes sense.
Public Transport
There is no direct bus connection from Zadar Airport to Pag Island. Public transport requires two steps:
- Airport to Zadar city centre: Take the Croatia Airlines/airport shuttle bus or a taxi/ride-share to Zadar Bus Station (Autobusni kolodvor Zadar).
- Zadar to Pag town: Intercity buses run several times daily along the A1 corridor; some services serve Pag town directly. Check the schedule on the Croatia Bus (autobusni-kolodvor.com) website.
The main limitation is frequency — buses to Pag can be infrequent outside peak summer, and onward travel from Pag town to Povljana (20 km) has no public service and requires a taxi or pre-arranged pickup.
Taxi and Ride-Share
Standard taxis from Zadar Airport are available at the taxi rank outside arrivals. Expect to pay approximately €70–90 for a direct trip to Povljana. Agree on a fixed fare before departure.
Uber and Bolt operate in Zadar city but coverage at the airport perimeter and to Pag Island is unreliable — do not rely on these for airport transfers.
Ferry Option (Northern Approach)
If you are arriving from the north or coming via bus from Zagreb/Rijeka, there is a car ferry between Prizna (mainland) and Žigljen (northern Pag, near Novalja). The crossing takes about 15 minutes and runs frequently in summer. From Žigljen, Povljana is about 35 minutes south along the D106.
This route is more relevant for travellers coming overland from Zagreb than for Zadar Airport arrivals.
