Novalja vs Povljana: Where to Stay on Pag Island

Novalja vs Povljana: Where to Stay on Pag Island

Pag Island is one island, but it contains two very different kinds of holiday. Novalja, in the north, is Croatia's most famous party destination outside Dubrovnik. Povljana, in the south, is a quiet village with shallow beaches and almost no nightlife. Both are on Pag Island — but they attract completely different guests.

Novalja

Novalja is the largest town on Pag Island and sits on the northern end, about 35 minutes by car from Povljana. It is a modern, well-equipped seaside town with supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and a wide marina promenade.

What made Novalja internationally known is Zrće Beach — about 2 km from town. Zrće has multiple open-air beach clubs that host major DJ events throughout July and August. It is genuinely large-scale: tens of thousands of visitors over a summer, with music until 6 am most nights. If this is what you are looking for, Novalja and Zrće are well organised and easy to navigate.

Outside of the Zrće scene, Novalja itself is a pleasant, practical town. The Talijanova buža, a Roman aqueduct tunnel that runs under the town and exits at the seafront, is worth a short visit. The town beach is pebble, clean, and busy in summer.

Novalja is best for:

  • Young adults wanting Croatia's beach club and festival scene
  • Travellers who want a full range of town amenities and nightlife
  • Groups of friends on a party holiday

Novalja is not ideal for:

  • Families with small children (the nightlife noise carries throughout the summer; Zrće is not oriented toward children)
  • Couples or guests who want a calm, relaxed stay
  • Anyone sensitive to noise or wanting early nights

Povljana

Povljana is a small village on the southern end of Pag Island, about 15 km from Pag town and 35 km from Novalja. It has a local supermarket, a few konoba restaurants, a waterfront promenade, and shallow, sandy-to-pebble beaches.

The atmosphere is completely different to Novalja. Evenings in Povljana are quiet: a walk along the waterfront, dinner at a local konoba, a glass of local wine. The village has no nightclubs and no late-night noise. The sea around Povljana is calm and shallow — the beaches are among the best on the island for families with young children.

The surrounding area is genuinely beautiful in the way that the whole island is beautiful: white limestone, clear water, sparse scrub, big sky.

Povljana is best for:

  • Families with young children (shallow, sandy entry beaches; low-traffic village)
  • Couples who want a proper rest
  • Guests who want a base for exploring Pag Island without being in the middle of the summer rush
  • Anyone who wants the Adriatic beach experience without the party scene

Povljana is not ideal for:

  • Travellers looking for nightlife, bars, or late-night activity
  • Guests who want a wide range of restaurants and shops within walking distance
  • Visitors expecting a fully equipped resort town

Can You Stay in One and Visit the Other?

Yes, easily. The drive between Povljana and Novalja is about 35 minutes along the D106 island road. Staying in Povljana and making a day trip to Novalja — or even an evening trip to see the town — is very practical. In the opposite direction, guests staying in Novalja can drive to Povljana beaches or Pag Old Town in under an hour.

If you are undecided, the question to ask yourself is simple: Do I want to be able to sleep before midnight? If yes, Povljana. If late nights and beach clubs are the point, Novalja.
